Presidio Trail Run & Presidio Picnic
Presidio Trail Run & Presidio Picnic

The GISSV San Francisco campus community spent a fun and active Sunday outdoors while participating in the Presidio Trail Run and Presidio Picnic.

On Sunday, April 30, many members of the GISSV community spent a fun and active day outdoors in the Presidio, building community and giving GISSV a strong presence at the Presidio Trail Run and the Presidio Picnic.

"Growing in number", these words most fittingly describe in a nutshell the 3rd year of our active participation as "Team GISSV" in the annual YMCA foot race festival. Not only did "San Franciscans" come out to their backyard event but so did many students, families and friends of GISSV from Berkeley/East Bay and Mountain View who did not hesitate to get out of bed early Sunday morning in order to make it to the starting line in time.

The day was made for running with lots of sunshine, no wind (or fog) on a challenging trail course for the 1.5 mile, 5K and 10K distances. The excitement of the first-time runners in particular was palpable and so was the joy after the accomplishment of their individual feat. Lots of family and friends were rooting from the sidelines and runners supported their peers with "Go GISSV" on the track. Although completion of the difficult course with "a smile on the face" remained the main goal, many ambitious runners of all ages could improve their performance from previous years. Team GISSV not only posted some age-group leaders and podium positions (Sophia Gibson, first place 5k in her age group, and Cosima Felten, 3 years old, as youngest runner) but also produced the overall winner of the 10K event for the first time (team captain Martin Stechert). Congratulations to the winners and everyone who participated and finished their run!

GISSV was also well-represented with arts & crafts and information booths both at the Trail Run and at the Presidio Picnic at the "Off the Grid" event on the Presidio Lawn in the afternoon. Our San Francisco 5th graders organized fun art and craft activities that many children and families enjoyed at this fabulous weekly event.

Just as with our Laternenfest in the fall, the trail run and picnic activities can serve as yet another example of a steadily growing presence of GISSV in the Presidio. The opening of our 3rd campus building "Funston 5" on the day after the run could have not better timed in that regard. We would like to thank all the volunteers who put their time, effort and creativity in supporting these events and gave GISSV a stellar community presence!
