Reading by Beate Dölling
“You’re out” – this is the title of Beate Dölling’s most recent novel and the GISSV has had the chance to organize a reading with the open, easy- going, yet very interesting German author. Her book centers around adolescents she met at the “Arche”, a nonprofit organization that helps troubled, mostly low-income youths. The teenagers she writes about are exactly the same age (14-17) her audience at the GISSV was, but still live in completely different worlds, where having food on the table is something out of the ordinary and getting a good education almost impossible. Students were very interested in her stories, but also wanted to know how the author came up with ideas, what her daily writing routine looked like and for how long she worked on each individual books – to find out that writing is a profession and requires a lot of hard work, too ;-)
