The GISSV hosts and participates in several events during the year. Among our recurring annual events are a traditional Weihnachtsmarkt/Holiday Market, where our Mountain View campus transforms into a bustling “holiday village” for a day, or the Berkeley Family Carnival, which features Brazilian drummers, student performances and many colorful costumes.
Events are a great part of school life and the GISSV community. They bring together parents, students, teachers and staff, and give a perfect opportunity to celebrate, meet new people and engage in conversations.
Some of our events are open to the public and create visibility for the school within its neighborhoods and communities, while other events are internal and celebrate American as well as German holidays, sportsmanship (Walk-a-thon, soccer matches with schools in the Bay Area), music (talent show, Weihnachtskonzert/Holiday Concert, joint musical productions with Bay Area institutions such as Stanford University) and much more!
Each year, all students, parents and staff of GISSV come together to celebrate the spirit of sport and philanthropy with our annual Walk-a-thon. It is a time of fun, food, music, and community building with important funds being raised for GISSV and for charity. GISSV’s SMV (Student Council) created the Walk-a-thon to promote philanthropy by encouraging our families to request contributions to support GISSV and its funding priorities:
- Silicon Valley Campus’ Capital Campaign: Provides significant funding to create facilities that mirror our high level of academic excellence in Pre-K to Grade 12 while accommodating all Mountain View students on one campus.
- SMV’s Annual Project: On SMV’s Annual Planning Day, students shared their ideas about improving our school while also choosing a fundraising project that students will be able to see, touch, and enjoy. This year’s project is third table tennis table.
- Charity: New in 2014, the SMV launched their Student Volunteer Program, which encourages all students to give back to our local community through the generosity of their time and energy. The SMV will also be selecting a charity beneficiary that provides vital services to its community.
A sponsor sheet will be sent home with every child on March 28th. Parents and children then request a monetary pledge from friends, neighbors, relatives and parents’ co-workers to support the student’s participation. Pledges can either be a flat amount or a per lap amount (anywhere from $0.10 per lap to $100.00+ for a flat donation). Students in grades 1 to 10 run from 5 to 45 laps (one lap is 400m) with many completing between 20 and 25 laps. KIBILI and Kindergarten students run shorter laps (100m) with a few up to 38 laps. Grades 11 and 12 will not be participating. The SMV’s goal this year is for every student to have at least three sponsors. The Sponsor Cards are kept by the student while the Sponsor Sheets need to be returned to the office by Wednesday, April 9th.
The Walk-a-thon will take place on Friday, April 11th, from 12:10pm to 1:45pm on the field next to the school in Whisman Park. Students will run, jog, skip, hop or walk their way around a 0.4 km track, finishing as many laps as they can within the almost two hours. KIBILI and Kindergarteners will make their rounds on a shorter track (approx.100m) in the middle of the field. Everybody walks at their own pace. Teachers and parents also participate, so don’t be bashful and join your kids! Water and snacks will be provided during the event, but we also ask each student to bring his/her own water bottle, labeled with their name, to promote a green event.
Completed laps are marked on a lap card by teachers or parents, which are collected after the event. The number of laps is then updated on the sponsor sheet, which will be sent home with the students that day. Parents and students have by Friday, May 2, 2014 to collect the donations from their sponsors, update and sign the Sponsor’s Card with their pledge payment date, and to return the funds to the office. Once the donations are tallied, we’ll celebrate our success by investing in new playground equipment this summer, by purchasing a new table tennis table and by giving a meaningful contribution to help a charity make a difference in its community.
Thank you for your generosity and support of GISSV.
