Preschool-12 Dual Language Education in
Two Locations in the Bay Area

Berkeley/East Bay

**Please note that the Berkeley/East Bay campus will continue to operate as GISSV through the end of the 2017/18 school year. We are working closely with our East Bay school community to assist them in transitioning operations to a locally-run, fully independent school starting in the 2018/19 school year. For more informations about this transition and plans for the future organization, please see our announcement section and visit ebgis.org.

The Berkeley/East Bay campus is located in the former Anna Yates School in Emeryville. This campus currently offers preschool through 8th grade. Our class sizes are small, which allows us to create a very personal atmosphere and has built a strong community of children across grade levels, parents and teachers. A variety of annual events, such as our lantern parade, family carnival and holiday celebration contribute to the strong community bond.

Both the natural setting and the urban environment of the East Bay serve as our extended classroom. We regularly go on field trips to places such as the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, UC Berkeley, the San Francisco Aquarium, SFMOMA and many more.

History of the Berkeley/East Bay Campus

We first opened our doors in St. John's Presbyterian Church on College Avenue in Berkeley in 2007, after a parent-led task force identified a number of families interested in German-English bilingual education in the East Bay. The parents teamed up with the existing German International School in Silicon Valley and jointly embarked on opening a Berkeley campus as an extension of the existing K-12 school in Mountain View. After the first year, the campus moved to a church building in Kensington, and in 2012, we moved our East Bay campus to the landmark Hillside school in the Berkeley Hills. In 2017, we relocated to the former Anna Yates School in Emeryville.
