Language Levels

The CEFR level describes the competency goal of the course. For example, at the beginning of an A2 course, students speak, understand, read, and write at the A1 level. At the end of the A2 course, they will do so at the A2 level.

While our Grundschule (Grades 1-6) also follows these language levels, the markers and descriptions are not entirely representative. Take into account that students in Grade 1-2 are learning to read and write "from scratch", with much work in those grades going towards letter and word segment recognition and phonetic sounding.

Many of our students (of all ages) speak/understand German at a higher level than they are able to read/write. We usually suggest to start lower and skip classes later if necessary, rather than making your Saturday School experience too challenging from the beginning.

If you are not sure which course is right for you, contact the Head of Saturday School at jmarsh@gissv.org.
