Exploring University-Level Physics

Three GISSV students participate in the University of Heidelberg's propaedeutic physics program.

We, three students in the class 9a, have been participating in a propaedeutic physics program that is being offered by the University of Heidelberg (YBS).

The program runs from the start of the year to the end of June and covers topics like kinematics, Newtonian axiom and gravity, astrophysics and more. We cover each of these topics with the use of a (very long) book, a website and online teachers. We complete assignments ranging from the simplest of converting units to highly complicated and frustrating questions. At the end of each month, we have to hand in an "exam", called "Qualitaetssicherung" (quality assurance) , which is then reviewed by the teachers and sent back to us.

The program also boasts live help from physics scholars from the university of Heidelberg, available to you anytime you have trouble with an assignment.

What are the benefits of this program, you ask?

It provides us the opportunity to shape our own educational path as well as to develop a unique profile in a competitive field. We hope that this program will give us a chance to apply our skills and improve in the fields of physics, mathematics and time-management. The program helps students explore future fields of study and you even earn an actual graded university diploma upon successful completion. It also brings multiple advantages with regard to our future education as well as job interviews and scholarship applications, considering that we will be able to demonstrate a university level diploma obtained at a young age.

We hope that other students who have a certain passion in any other subject will go the extra mile and also take part in a program like this. This opportunity was kindly made possible by Frau Genz. We thank her very much for her support and for fostering our passion for physics.
