GISSV 12th Graders at a Gilead STEM Event

GISSV students from grade 12 attended a STEM event where they listened to an inspiring panel discussion and ran through a whole development cycle of a new drug.

The pharmaceutical company Gilead, based in Foster City, organized a STEM event that some GISSV students from grade 12 took part. They had the chance to listen to a panel discussion about how important internships are to find out your interest (or find out what you are NOT interested in), ran through a whole development cycle of a new drug, including the communication that is needed between the different divisions from idea, visualization, trials to the hardware involved. In roundtable discussions, the students got to know about the many careers that are possible in the STEM field at a company like Gilead. GISSV alumni Jessica Spradlin, currently attending a biochemistry graduate program at UC Berkeley, spoke about her journey and how a personal interest can turn into a career. Another important aspect was the value of speaking a second language even in engineering and math professions! "The speakers were so inspiring, in a very authentic way," describes Diana H. "It is quite amazing how many different kinds of jobs and career they have here," adds Ellen M. Thank you to all the organizers as well as Judith Hage and Melody Spradlin, who made sure that GISSV students could go there.
