GISSV spearheaded the very first Sharks German Heritage Night celebrating German heritage in the Bay Area and the connection to the San Jose Sharks!
In April 2020, GISSV was given the honor of spearheading the first-ever "German Heritage Night" for the San Jose Sharks. It was shaping up to be a wonderful event with a special GISSV section, jumbotron mentions, GISSV ambassadors invited on the ice, and so much more! Unfortunately, the pandemic canceled the April 2020 event along with everything else.
However, the Sharks and GISSV were still determined to celebrate the "German Heritage Night," so we have been working together to reimagine how we could celebrate it in early 2021 – virtually – and on Friday, March 5 we did celebrated German Heritage in the Bay Area with a fantastic panel of special guests:
- Jonathan Becher, Sharks CEO & former SAP Executive
- Hans-Ulrich Südbeck, German Consul General, San Francisco
- Frank Marx, GermanWriter/Producer/Actor & Tour Guide at Frank-in-Cisco
And who would have been better to guide us and the panel as our special Moderator for the evening than our very own Susan Malone, GISSV teacher and long time dedicated San Jose Sharks' fan!
The night was a full success thank you to our amazing panelists, a very special visit by Sharkie, a video greeting by German National Hockey Team player Lean Bergmann, GISSV students teaching Sharks players German, a raffle with autographed prizes, and a Q&A session.

We hope to see everyone in the Shark Tank next time!
