Berlin Candy Bomber Celebrates his 100th Birthday

Berlin Candy Bomber Celebrates his 100th Birthday

GISSV had the distinct honor to celebrate the impressive milestone of Colonel Halvorsen's life (in coordination with the Halvorsen family) and his timely message of hope.

Instead of his usual public appearances, Colonel Halvorsen had a private gathering surrounded by his family this year. This change prompted GISSV and the Halvorsen family to team up and find digital and creative ways others could participate in wishing Colonel Halvorsen a very Happy 100th Birthday.

History Teacher Stefanie Wenk reached out to fellow teachers from both campuses to coordinate several student projects. Their combined efforts created a unique and fitting tribute that was our special gift for Colonel Halvorsen. The project included:

  • A custom portfolio book of student art renderings in Mr. Halvorsen's honor.

  • High School students translated and read aloud short eye-witness texts about the impact of receiving CARE packages based on "Memory of 70 years of CARE" by the CARE Foundation.

  • Bilingual video compilation of "Happy Birthday" sung by our students that was also included in the Halvorsen family event video.

  • Special in-person delivery to Colonel Halvorsen in Utah of the original artwork and gifts from the GISSV community.

"Thank you for the amazing book we received yesterday! We are completely amazed at the artwork of the students, and my father is very overcome with the things your school has done." ~ Denise Williams (Daughter of Gail S. Halvorsen)

Thanks to the Turley Family from our San Francisco campus and their family in Utah, we were able to personally present our gift to Colonel Halvorsen and his family on his birthday on October 10, 2020 (video):
