Exploring the World of Pipe Organs with Orgelkids

Students assembled and played a tabletop organ while learning about its mechanics, history, and cultural significance from professional organists.

As part of their Music class, our 7th and 8th graders in Mountain View had the exciting opportunity to take part in an Orgelkids workshop. Organists Jörg Reddin (Arnstadt, Germany) and Vlada Moran (Santa Cruz, CA) introduced students to the fascinating world of pipe organs, guiding them through the process of assembling and disassembling a tabletop organ. Through this hands-on experience, students gained insight into how the instrument works, its historical significance, and its role in music over the centuries.

Orgelkids is an educational initiative founded in the Netherlands in 2009 to introduce young learners to the pipe organ and its cultural legacy. The project provides schools and organizations with a specially designed organ-building kit, allowing students to construct and play a fully functional miniature organ.

This workshop offered our students a unique way to connect music theory with practical experience, deepening their understanding of this intricate instrument. A big thank you to our guest organists for sharing their expertise and passion!
