GISSV SF Celebrates Walk-to-School Day

Our participation in SF’s Bike & Roll to School Week brought energy, smiles, and smoothies—thanks to our walking families and wonderful volunteers!

In celebration of Earth Month and National Bike to School Day, GISSV joined San Francisco’s Bike & Roll to School Week on Wednesday, May 7. The event, organized and supported by the SF Bike Coalition, encouraged students and families to enjoy a healthy, active commute while helping the environment.

To make participation easy and fun, we offered several meet-up locations where students could be dropped off and walk to school with a parent or volunteer. It was wonderful to see children arriving at school energized after walking with friends and classmates. One first-grade parent shared how surprised—and proud—they were that their child could walk such a distance already. Others appreciated the opportunity to connect as a community in the morning.

As a special reward, all students who walked (even partway) were greeted at the welcome desk, where they could pick an incentive and fill out a raffle ticket. During lunch break, the fun continued with the ever-popular Fender Blender—a stationary bike that powers a smoothie blender—brought out by parent volunteer Gerardo.

A heartfelt thank-you goes out to teacher Barbara Troy, parent Mami Mori, and all the parents who helped organize the event, guided walking groups, or supported on campus—you made this meaningful experience possible!
