GISSV at GISNY’s Performing Arts Exchange

Three GISSV students spent an inspiring week of performing arts, collaboration, and cultural exchange in New York City.

Our students Katya, Rania, and Amelie (grades 9–11) recently participated in a special Performing Arts Exchange Program at the German International School New York (GISNY), accompanied by Ms. Förster.

Together with students from German international schools across North America, they spent an intensive and inspiring week immersed in workshops, rehearsals, collaborative performances, and cultural exchange. The program brought together young artists with a shared passion for music, theater, and performance, while also creating opportunities for international connection and creative collaboration.

In addition to their artistic work, students explored some of New York City’s cultural highlights, including visits to the Whitney Museum, Midtown Manhattan, and SoHo. One of the week’s most memorable experiences was attending the dress rehearsal of El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego at the Metropolitan Opera in the presence of composer Gabriela Lena Frank ahead of the production’s premiere.

A special thank you goes to Tilman Michael, Chorus Director of the Metropolitan Opera and member of the GISNY community, for providing students with a unique behind-the-scenes introduction to the opera house.

Throughout the week, participants worked closely with experienced artists who have helped shape New York’s performing arts scene for many years. The exchange concluded with a collaborative final performance at GISNY, where students presented the results of their workshops and shared their artistic work with the community.

We are especially grateful to the German International School New York for hosting this inspiring exchange program and for their warm collaboration and support throughout the week.

GISSV is proud that our students were able to represent the school in this exciting international pilot program and gain experiences that will stay with them far beyond the classroom.
