Student Interview with new HoS Kathrin Roeschel

Our young San Francisco journalists met Kathrin Roeschel for an interview in March.

Schülerinterview mit unserer neuen Schulleiterin Frau Röschel

Frau Röschel ist unsere neue Schulleiterin! Die jungen Journalisten unserer Schülerzeitung “Today in the Bay”, Schüler*innen der Grundschule am GISSV San Francisco Campus, haben sie zum Interview getroffen.

Hallo, Frau Röschel!

Harry (4. Klasse): When were you born?

Frau Röschel: I was born on February 5. And I came here on February 6. This was my birthday present!

Sloane (3. Klasse): Wo wurden Sie geboren?

Frau Röschel: Ich bin in Magdeburg geboren. This is about 80 miles from Berlin in Germany.

Isabella dSM (3. Klasse): Waren Sie schon immer Lehrerin?

Frau Röschel: Ja, eigentlich wollte ich schon immer Lehrerin sein. Schon als ich selbst noch in der Schule war! Später war ich Schwimmtrainerin und habe ein Team trainiert. Und dann wollte ich unbedingt Physik und Mathematik und auch Kunst studieren. Und wie passt das alles zusammen? Ich bin also Lehrerin geworden. Als Lehrerin kann ich ganz viel gestalten. Die Schulen sind in Deutschland jedoch sehr groß, da kann man als Lehrerin gar nicht so viel an der Schule mitgestalten, sondern immer nur in der Klasse. Und deshalb dachte ich mir: Wenn ich Schule verändern will, dann muss ich auch noch Schulleiterin werden. Und deshalb bin ich Schulleiterin geworden.

Harry: Do you speak English?

Frau Röschel: Ja. With an accent, as you can hear. But I’m working on it! [lacht]

Katarina (4. Klasse): Warum kamen sie nach Amerika? Warum haben sich nicht eine deutsche Schule in Deutschland ausgesucht?

Frau Röschel: Da kann ich ein ganzes Buch darüber schreiben! [lacht] Ich glaube, dass Deutschland und Amerika eine ganz besondere Freundschaft haben. Manchmal ist es nicht so leicht mit unserer Freundschaft – so wie das mit guten Freunden auch ist – und manchmal ist es ganz leicht! Ich bin gespannt, welche die schönen, wertvollen Seiten unserer Freundschaft sind, die wir an der GISSV am besten zusammenkriegen.

Swantje (3. Klasse): Warum wollten Sie an der GISSV arbeiten?

Frau Röschel: Ich bin richtig doll gerne Lehrerin. Und überlege mir immer, wie ich meine Fächer, Mathe und Physik, am besten Kindern beibringen kann. Und mich interessiert auch, wie Kinder Mathematik und Physik sehen, wie also euer Blick auf die Welt der Zahlen ist. Und deswegen möchte ich unbedingt mit Kindern arbeiten. Und jetzt eine Schule zu haben, die Preschool to 12 ist, das finde ich super interessant! Und noch dazu an so einem schönen Ort, hier in Kalifornien! Besser gehts nicht, oder?

David (4. Klasse): Warum wollten Sie genau an der GISSV arbeiten?

Frau Röschel: Ich habe schon in Deutschland gelebt und dann in Amerika und dann wieder in Deutschland. Und egal, wo ich war, hatte ich immer etwas Sehnsucht nach dem anderen Ort. Und deswegen habe ich jetzt geguckt, welche Schulen in Amerika eine Schulleiterin suchen. Und da ich schon sehr oft an der Ostküste war, dachte ich mir: Jetzt ist es Zeit für die Westküste! Ich habe schon vor etwa 20 Jahren, als die Schule noch ganz klein war, nach einer Stelle hier an der GISSV geguckt. Aber damals gab es noch keine Oberstufe. Ich bin jedoch Oberstufenlehrerin. Und jetzt habt ihr schon eine Weile eine Highschool. Und deshalb bin ich hergekommen. Weil es wirklich eine gute Schule ist, weil ich die deutsche und die amerikanische Sprache und Kultur gut finde, weil ihr hier beides habt und weil es an so einem tollen Ort wie Kalifornien ist.

Isabella N. (3. Klasse): Was finden Sie besonders an der GISSV?

Frau Röschel: Für mich ist es ein echtes Geschenk, dass ihr alle Lust habt, mit mir zu sprechen und sagt, was euch wichtig ist an unserer Schule. Und man merkt, dass es euch hier gut geht. Und das finde ich ganz toll.

Katarina: Was ist Ihr Ziel an der GISSV?

Frau Röschel: Die GISSV ist eine ganz besondere und auch ganz besonders schöne Schule und ich möchte mit euch und der GISSV-Gemeinschaft zusammen gucken: Wie können wir diese gute Schule noch besser machen?

Katarina: War es ihr Traumjob, an der GISSV zu arbeiten?

Frau Röschel: Absolut! Das habe ich mir schon ganz lange gewünscht. Und ich habe immer geguckt: Wann ist die Principal-Stelle available? Und jetzt hat es gut gepasst für mich. Ich dachte mir, nachdem ich so in Berlin und in New York gearbeitet habe, in zwei großen, lauten Städten, wollte ich jetzt in eine coole Stadt, die eine Großstadt ist und trotzdem so besonders charmant wie San Francisco.

David: Warst Du schon an einer anderen Schule Schulleiterin?

Frau Röschel: Ja, in Berlin. Das ist eigentlich lustig: Ich war an der amerikanischen Schule in Berlin Schulleiterin und jetzt bin ich an der deutschen Schule in Kalifornien Schulleiterin.

Isabella dSM: Arbeitest Du noch an einer anderen Schule?

Frau Röschel: Jetzt arbeite ich nur noch an der GISSV. Aber ich bin meistens nicht hier bei euch in San Francisco, sondern in Mountain View. Ich habe euch ja schon erzählt, dass meine Fächer Mathematik und Physik sind. Das sind Fächer für die älteren Kinder.

Katarina: Sind Sie oft gestresst?

Frau Röschel: Ich habe ganz gerne Stress! Stress hört sich so negativ an. Manchmal bedeutet Stress aber nur, dass ganz viel los ist. Und wenn ganz viel los ist, das mag ich gerne! So gesehen: Ja, vielleicht bin ich gestresst. Aber nicht im Sinne von “Es nervt mich!”, sondern ich finde es eher gut, wenn ganz viel los ist!

Harry: What is your favorite color?

Frau Röschel: That’s red. I know, it sounds boring. But it’s red. Like the Golden Gate Bridge.

Katarina: Haben Sie auch Kinder?

Frau Röschel: Ja, ich habe drei Kinder! Mein jüngstes Kind, Max, ist an der GISSV in der 11. Klasse. Mein ältestes Kind heisst Tom. Er ist Arzt in Berlin. Und dazwischen ist meine Tochter, Lina. Sie ist Geografin. Sie hat für die UN gearbeitet und arbeitet jetzt für eine Umweltschutzorganisation. Und ich habe drei Enkelkinder! Sie heißen Karla, Emma und Lore.

Harry: What’s your favorite food?

Frau Röschel: Ich esse gerne Thailändisch. Denn ich koche gerne für meine Familie. Und in meiner Familie sind manche vegan und andere sind vegetarisch. Und manche essen gerne Fisch und andere essen gerne Fleisch. Und beim thailändischen Essen kann man alles gut miteinander kombinieren und Spass haben beim Kochen und Essen.

Katarina: Vielen Dank für das Interview! Wir freuen uns sehr, dass Sie gekommen sind!

Mrs. Röschel is our new Head of School! The young journalists of our school newspaper “Today in the Bay”, students of the Elementary School at the GISSV San Francisco Campus, met her for an interview.

Hello, Mrs. Röschel!

Harry (4th grade): When were you born?

Mrs. Röschel: I was born on February 5. And I came here on February 6. This was my birthday present!

Sloane (3rd grade): Where were you born?

Mrs. Röschel: I was born in Magdeburg. This is about 80 miles from Berlin in Germany.

Isabella dSM (3rd grade): Have you always been a teacher?

Mrs. Röschel: Yes, actually I always wanted to be a teacher. Even when I was still in school! Later I was a swim trainer and I trained a team. And then I really wanted to study physics and mathematics and also art. But how does all of this come together? So I became a teacher. As a teacher I can do a lot. However, the schools in Germany are very large, so as a teacher you can not help a lot developing a school, only in class. And that's why I thought to myself: If I want to change schools, then I also have to become principal. And that's the reason I became principal.

Harry: Do you speak English?

Mrs. Röschel: Yes. With an accent, as you can hear. But I’m working on it! [laughs]

Katarina (4th grade): Why did you move to America? Why didn't you choose a German school in Germany?

Mrs. Röschel: I could write a whole book about it! [laughs] I think Germany and America have a very special friendship. Sometimes it is not so easy with our friendships - as it is with good friends - and sometimes it is very easy! I am excited to see which are the beautiful, valuable sides of our friendship that we can bring together at GISSV.

Swantje (3rd grade): Why did you want to work at GISSV?

Mrs. Röschel: I love being a teacher. And I always think about how I can best teach children my subjects, math and physics. And I am also interested in how children experience mathematics and physics, and the world of numbers. And that's why I really want to work with children. And now working at a school from Preschool through 12th grade is super interesting! And in such a beautiful place – here in California! It doesn't get any better, does it?

David (4th grade): Why did you want to work at GISSV?

Mrs. Röschel: I have already lived in Germany and then in America and then again in Germany. And no matter where I was, I always longed for the other place. And that's why I've looked for schools in America that posted a job of a principal/Head of School. And since I've been to the East Coast a lot, I thought to myself: Now it's time for the West Coast! I looked for a job here at GISSV about 20 years ago when the school was still very small. But at that time GISSV had no high school. However, I am a secondary school teacher. And GISSV has a high school for a while now. And that's why I came here. Because it is really a good school, because I think the German and American language and culture are great, because you have both here and because it is in a great place like California.

Isabella N. (3rd grade): What do you think is special about GISSV?

Mrs. Röschel: For me it is a real gift that you all want to speak to me and say what is important to you at our school. And you can tell that you are doing fine here. And I think that's really great.

Katarina: What is your goal for GISSV?

Mrs. Röschel: GISSV is a very special and a particularly amazing school and I would like to work together with you and the GISSV community on making the school even better.

Katarina: Was it your dream job to work at GISSV?

Mrs. Röschel: Absolutely! I wanted to work here for a long time. And I've always observed the job postings for an opening. And now it was a good fit for me. After working in Berlin and New York, in two big, noisy cities, I thought to myself that I wanted to move to a cool city – a big, but also a charming city just like San Francisco.

David: Have you been a principal at another school?

Mrs. Röschel: Yes, in Berlin. It's actually funny: I was the principal at the American school in Berlin and now I'm Head of School at a German school in California.

Isabella dSM: Are you still working at another school?

Mrs. Röschel: Now I'm only working at GISSV. But I'm mostly not here with you in San Francisco but in Mountain View. As I told you before my subjects are mathematics and physics for older students.

Katarina: Do you often feel stressed?

Mrs. Röschel: I really like stress! Stress sounds so negative. Sometimes stress just means that there is a lot going on. And when there is a lot going on, I like that! Seen like this: Yes, maybe I'm stressed out. But not in the sense of "It annoys me!", I think it's good when there is a lot going on!

Harry: What is your favorite color?

Mrs. Röschel: That’s red. I know, it sounds boring. But it’s red. Like the Golden Gate Bridge.

Katarina: Do you also have children?

Mrs. Röschel: Yes, I have three children! My youngest child, Max, is in 11th grade at GISSV. My oldest child is called Tom. He is a doctor in Berlin. And in between is my daughter, Lina. She is a geographer. She has worked for the UN and is now working for an environmental protection organization. And I have three grandchildren! Their names are Karla, Emma and Lore.

Harry: What’s your favorite food?

Mrs. Röschel: I like Thai food, because I like to cook for my family and in my family some are vegan and some are vegetarian. And some like to eat fish and others like to eat meat. And with Thai food you can combine everything well and have fun cooking and eating.
