Students Bring Warhol’s Famous Cats to the Community

Inspired by Andy Warhol’s Cats, SF third graders created colorful cat artwork—now on display at a neighborhood cat hotel in the Castro.

Our San Francisco third graders recently explored the playful world of Andy Warhol through the book Andy Warhol’s Cats, discovering a fun fact along the way: Warhol had more than 20 cats, almost all named Sam. Living in a home filled with cats racing up and down the stairs, Warhol and his mother created an art book featuring whimsical cat drawings—an instant hit that even inspired people to purchase the cats.

Inspired by Warhol’s story and artistic style, students created their own vibrant cat artworks, experimenting with color, pattern, and personality. The result is a joyful collection of kitty masterpieces that reflects both creativity and storytelling.

The artwork is now proudly displayed in the window of Kitty Chateau, a luxury cat hotel in the Castro neighborhood. Kitty Chateau is owned by a former GISSV parent and is located just steps away from our San Francisco campus. Many passersby have already stopped to admire the students’ work, turning the display into a true example of art in the community.

If you’re in the neighborhood, be sure to take a look—and keep Kitty Chateau in mind the next time you travel. Your furry friend will be in caring hands while you’re away.
